“Napoleon”

Chihuahua 3 month old Male

Napoleon was brought to the hospital because he was nearly comatose and had not been eating well that day. His heart rate was fast, he was drooling and his temperature was very low. These are signs of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). We checked his blood sugar level and verified that it was very low.

An IV was started and he was resuscitated with warm electrolyte fluids and dextrose (sugar). We monitored his temperature until it was back to normal. Once his mentation was normal, we started feeding him small amounts of food to help stabilize his blood sugar.

He began perking up and was eating well. When his owner came to pick him up, he was happy and playful. He still needed close monitoring, but he had improved dramatically.

These toy breed puppies often burn up their energy sources quickly and collapse if they are not fed frequently. They are then rushed to the hospital and treated quickly. If not, they can go into seizures. They should be fed frequently and if they do not eat, they should see a veterinarian.
