Dr. Brian MacKie earned his DVM at Washington State University, graduating in 2005. Following graduation he completed a one year rotating internship in small animal medicine and surgery at VCA Sacramento Animal Medical Group in Sacramento, California. After the short time in Sacramento, he moved out to the University of Wisconsin in Madison where, from 2006-2009, he completed his residency training in Cardiology. During his time there, Dr. MacKie helped implement the use of the Amplatz Canine Ductal Occluder at the University of Wisconsin, authored a paper on the use of an implantable ECG monitor for the evaluation of syncope in dogs, and assisted in prospective research on pulmonary hypertension and cardiac biomarkers. In July 2009, Dr MacKie successfully completed all of the requirements for board certification and is now a Diplomate of American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in the specialty of Cardiology. Dr MacKie is on staff full-time at VCA Sacramento Veterinary Referral Center.
The main services Dr. MacKie will bring to Veterinary Specialty Services are echocardiography, electrocardiography (ECG) as well as interpret radiographs along side the radiologists. Echocardiography will be used to evaluate cardiac function including systolic function, diastolic function, and valvular integrity as well as evaluate for congenital or acquired heart diseases from the most common to more complex. ECG will accurately diagnose cardiac arrhythmias and implement the best course of therapy or monitoring the efficacy of antiarrhythmic therapy. Dr. MacKie can also optimize congestive heart failure therapy for patients through the use of all three modalities to ensure the best treatment are chosen.
In the future, Dr. MacKie will have a fully functional cardiac catheterization laboratory for pacemaker implantation, balloon valvuloplasty, and non-invasive PDA occlusion in Sacramento. We are very pleased to welcome Dr. MacKie to the Fresno area. Please do not hesitate to contact our office at 559-486-2100 to get more information or to make an appointment or you may call our Specialty Services Coordinator, Cindy Hale, RVT at 559-301-9710.
