brian_mackie Dr. Filipowicz was born and raised in Severna Park, outside Annapolis, Maryland.  He received a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and a B.A. in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania. After trading gold, silver, and oil options for several years in New York, he worked several veterinary-related jobs in Cambridge, MA in preparation for veterinary school.  He was accepted out- of-state to UC Davis, where he completed his DVM degree.  Immediately after veterinary school, he moved back to the east coast for a rotating internship in medicine and surgery at Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. He stayed at Virginia where he completed a residency in small animal surgery and received his M.A. in veterinary sciences. Dean entered the American College of Veterinary Surgeons as a diplomate in 2009.

Dr. Filipowicz is published in several veterinary journals and has co-authored book chapters. His research primarily investigates a novel type of orthopedic fixation. Dean’s special interests include fracture management, trauma, skin and reconstructive surgery, and minimally invasive surgery.   When not at work, Dean can be found enjoying all outdoor physical activities.

brian_mackie Dr. Brian MacKie earned his DVM at Washington State University, graduating in 2005. Following graduation he completed a one year rotating internship in small animal medicine and surgery at VCA Sacramento Animal Medical Group in Sacramento, California. After the short time in Sacramento, he moved out to the University of Wisconsin in Madison where, from 2006-2009, he completed his residency training in Cardiology. During his time there, Dr. MacKie helped implement the use of the Amplatz Canine Ductal Occluder at the University of Wisconsin, authored a paper on the use of an implantable ECG monitor for the evaluation of syncope in dogs, and assisted in prospective research on pulmonary hypertension and cardiac biomarkers. In July 2009, Dr MacKie successfully completed all of the requirements for board certification and is now a Diplomate of American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in the specialty of Cardiology. Dr MacKie is on staff full-time at VCA Sacramento Veterinary Referral Center.

The main services Dr. MacKie will bring to Veterinary Specialty Services are echocardiography, electrocardiography (ECG) as well as interpret radiographs along side the radiologists. Echocardiography will be used to evaluate cardiac function including systolic function, diastolic function, and valvular integrity as well as evaluate for congenital or acquired heart diseases from the most common to more complex. ECG will accurately diagnose cardiac arrhythmias and implement the best course of therapy or monitoring the efficacy of antiarrhythmic therapy. Dr. MacKie can also optimize congestive heart failure therapy for patients through the use of all three modalities to ensure the best treatment are chosen.

In the future, Dr. MacKie will have a fully functional cardiac catheterization laboratory for pacemaker implantation, balloon valvuloplasty, and non-invasive PDA occlusion in Sacramento. We are very pleased to welcome Dr. MacKie to the Fresno area. Please do not hesitate to contact our office at 559-486-2100 to get more information or to make an appointment or you may call our Specialty Services Coordinator, Cindy Hale, RVT at 559-301-9710.

tom_lewis

Dr. Lewis was born and raised in Arizona. One only has to look to his 2nd grade school reports to trace his desire to be a veterinarian. After graduation from Arizona State University and marrying his high school sweetheart, Dr. Lewis attended Colorado State University where he obtained his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1986. He then worked at Mesa Veterinary Hospital for two years before starting his residency in dermatology. In 1991 he finished his residency and achieved Diplomate certification by the American College of Veterinary Dermatology.

Dr. Lewis founded the Dermatology Clinic for Animals (later Dermatology for Animals) in 1991 with offices in Mesa, and Tucson, Arizona as well as in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Within three years clinics were added in Salt Lake City, Utah, El Paso, Texas and Omaha, Nebraska. By bringing a clinic to these cities, it meant that, for the first time, residents of the state had a board- certified veterinary dermatologist to treat the severely afflicted dermatology patient.

Dr. Lewis has a passion for the veterinary profession and the specialty of dermatology. His principle interest includes investigating the role of allergies and the effect they have on the skin. Improving the quality of life for a severely allergic patient is a challenge Dr. Lewis loves to accept and fulfill. Dr. Lewis has written journal articles and supported research on a number of projects during his career. He is frequently invited to lecture at veterinary continuing education meetings around the country, and is always eager to share with his colleagues some of the insights he has gained regarding dermatology disorders in animals.

Other areas of interest outside of veterinary medicine include any outdoor activity. He is a birding enthusiast, but also enjoys sailing, hiking and camping. He sings in his church choir and in the Sonoran Desert Chorale. In addition to the regular concert schedule, he has performed with the Chorale in famous cathedrals throughout Italy, Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic

frazer2

Dr. Megan Frazer grew up in southern California and, at an early age, discovered her love for animals. Her first pet was a cockapoo with chronic ear disease and served to introduce her to the challenge of veterinary dermatology. While in undergraduate training in southern California she worked as a veterinary technician and her love for dermatology grew as she observed the affect that skin disease has on the human-animal bond.

She was part of the charter class at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, California. This veterinary school promotes self-directed learning, which enabled Dr. Frazer to become a confident and skilled practitioner. Western University also allowed Dr. Frazer to work with and learn from many prominent doctors in southern California and Arizona. While in Arizona, Dr. Frazer worked with the dermatologists at Dermatology for Animals and fell in love with the clinic and staff. After graduating in 2007 she began a small-animal internship at Southern Arizona Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center in Tucson, Arizona. During her internship she worked with doctors board-certified in surgery, internal medicine, oncology, ophthalmology, and dentistry. She also had more opportunities to work with the dermatologists at Dermatology for Animals and, upon completion of her internship in 2008, began her residency with them.

Dr. Frazer currently works at our California clinics in Culver City and Campbell. She will be working in our Torrance, California clinic when it opens in 2010. She has a special interest in chronic ear disease and has performed numerous video-otoscopy procedures. Dr. Frazer has also performed laser procedures and diagnoses and treats a variety of skin and ear diseases.

Dr. Frazer has three dogs: Emma, Mickey and Boris. As a young puppy, Emma was given to Dr. Frazer during veterinary school and was initially mistaken for a piglet by one of the large animal practitioners! Boris was adopted from a rescue organization and Mickey was a stray dog in Tucson, Arizona, that Dr. Frazer rescued. Dr. Frazer is treating Emma and Mickey for skin allergies. She is an avid reader and frequents art museums. She loves to travel and has been to many places in the United States as well as in Mexico and Costa Rica.

debbie_morey The desire to be a veterinarian is one of Dr. Morey’s earliest memories. She has been a life-long rescuer of pets and critters of all sorts, sometimes to the chagrin of the humans living with her.

She obtained her DVM from UC Davis in 1992. After graduation she completed a year-long internship in small animal medicine and surgery at the Sacramento Animal Medical Group. Dr. Morey then moved to Fresno for a year of intensive emergency and critical care experience at the Veterinary Emergency Service. That year solidified her love of emergency medicine and critical care and she returned to Sacramento to head up the emergency department at the Sacramento Animal Medical Group for the next four years.

In 1998 Dr. Morey embarked on a residency training program in Emergency Medicine and Critical Care under the mentorship of Dr. Steve Haskins at UC Davis. In 2005, Dr. Morey became a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care.

Dr. Morey’s professional interests include resuscitation from shock or trauma of all types, critical care monitoring, nutrition and wound management. Dr. Morey is especially interested in training veterinarians and technicians in critical care techniques. Dr. Morey is a member of CVMA, AVMA, and VECCS.

When not working, Dr. Morey loves spending time with her children,Russell and Kent and her dog Scout. She also enjoys downhill skiing, running, hiking, bicycling and wine-tasting.

jeannine_berger Dr. Jeannine Berger DVM, DACVB (Behavior) obtained her veterinary degree in 1991 in Zurich, Switzerland. After graduation she worked at the University of Zurich and in private practice before moving to Davis, California in 1998. Since then, she has completed a residency in veterinary behavior and attained board certification with the American College for Veterinary Behaviorists (2007).

She currently practices Veterinary Behavior Medicine at UC Davis and in her private practice in Sacramento. Dr. Berger focuses on strengthening the human-animal bond and helping owners modify and manage their animal’s unwanted behavior. Her professional interests include anxiety and aggression problems in dogs and cats, as well as addressing both repetitive behaviors and unruly behavior problems such as jumping, barking, chewing, digging and many others.

Dr. Berger believes that prevention is the best form of therapy. When miscommunication and problems in the human-animal relationship can be addressed early on, the chance of an animal staying in the home is significantly higher. Dr. Berger wishes that more people would turn to their Veterinarian for behavioral advice since many behavior problems are psychological problems and not necessarily training problems. In most cases, positive results may be obtained through owner commitment and dedication.

Dr. Berger is also an internationally renowned speaker and teaches at UC Davis. She lives with her partner Jeff, 3 horses, 3 dogs and 3 cats in Vacaville CA. Her hobbies include trail riding, hiking, skiing and wine tasting.
